The remains of the Greek Temple of Apollo are situated on the island of Ortygia, the ancient centre of Siracusa (Syracuse) in south-east Sicily. Built of sandstone in the early sixth century BC, it is the earliest peripteral Doric temple in Sicily and is attributed to the architect Epicles. Syracuse was then the greatest of the Dorian colonies, the largest city in the Greek world and in the third century BC, home to the greatest mathematician of antiquity, Archimedes.
