The introduction of the all-steel car for passenger serviceon American railroads has been prophesied many times duringthe past few years and the past month has seen the first realmove toward its fulfilment. This refers to the order for 200passenger cars, placed by the Pennsylvania R. R. with theAmerican Car & Foundry Company, the Pressed Steel CarCompany and the Altoona car shops, the general design of whichis illustrated herewith. Our readers are acquainted with what has been done in the. VIEW SHOWING STEEL PASSENGER COACH PARTIALLY COMPLETED line of steel passenger car building in this country and knowthat several railroads have built cars of this type during thepast few years, which have been placed in service and are nowbeing given a practical trial. In addition to these strictly ex-perimental cars there are also in operation comparatively largenumbers of all-steel cars built for short haul traffic, such assubway, elevated and suburban work. These cars, while ofcourse a big step in progress, do not present the difficulties indesign that a full-sized modern passenger coach for a long haulservice gives. Their service, however, and many of themhave been in operation for over three years, has of course beenof great value, and incidentally a great stimulus, in the designof the larger type, since they have conclusively proved that asteel car can be built which is perfectly satisfactory to both thetraveling public and the railways.
