M-Lidia House, Montagut, Girona, 2000 - 2002. Exterior. Architect: RCR Arquitectes
The M-Lidia House in Montagut, Girona (2000-2002) takes the underlying type and purifies it: the façades are entirely glazed and the resulting, transparent prisms rest upon an excavated mound with garage beneath. The plan in this case is symmetrical, with a central volume and detached, equal-sized wings and there is once again a subliminal hint at the idea of a classical villa in the landscape. In the recent project for a row of dwellings for the Vall de Bianya, a subterranean passageway provides access underneath and lifts bring people to the surface. The individual dwellings are to be clad in weathered, rust-coloured steel. The result will resemble a row of purified agricultural structures like minimalist boxes, providing framed views over the rural setting. The ever present dialectic between primitive, subterranean shelter, and the modern, liberated space up above, could not be spelt out more clearly. It seems to correspond to the architects' idea that modern technology should provide a new way of life while at the same time refocusing attention upon the aura of the natural world
