The coastdistrict between the Haliacmon and Olympus, as well asthe soaslopes of that mountain, formed Pioria, the originalhome of the Muses. The chief cities of Pieria werePydna, where Perseus, the last king of Macedon, was?iafeated by the Romans, and Dium. From this neigh-baurhocrd to the head of the Thermaic Gulf a vast maritimeplain extended, which was intersected by the Lydias andthe A-xius, as well as the Haliacmon. The Scardus chain, which has been spoken of asseparating Macedonia from Illyria, is the northerncontinuation of Pindus, and the two together form awell-deiined backbone, which may be compared
