Family Searching for fossils. Island of Fur, Knudekilerne, Denmark. Searching for prehistoric fossils at the northern beach at Knudekilerne on the island of Fur. Fur island is known for its large deposits of fossils. Petrified sea urchins are commonly found and this tourist family has already found one. But they have bigger ambitions: Here they use small hammers and chisels to split the stones in order to expose more exciting fossils, encapsulated by the stones. For protecting their eyes against flying splinters the carry glasses, the two kids carries real safety goggles. Behind the woman a father and his two sons are also looking for fossils. Searching for fossils is an important tourist attraction for Fur. The small island of Fur and the surrounding coastal areas in Limfjorden (the fjord separating Jutland from Vendsyssel), like Mors, is the world largest producer of Mo-Clay. Mo-Clay is diatoms sedimentations from some 55 million years ago, when Denmark was covered by the deep sea, which had a high content of diatoms algae. The fossils which can be found is both fish, animals, plants and birds. The local museum arrange quick courses for tourists in fossil hunting - a course this family attended. Fur is a small 22 Km2 island with some 1000 inhabitants and located in Limfjorden - the narrow fjord, separating Jutland and Vendsyssel in the northern part of Denmark.
