Alexander Henry was born in Loughbricklan, CountyDown, North of Ireland, June 15, 1763. When he wastwo years of age his father died, leaving a widow and fivechildren,— Alexander being the youngest. In 1783 heemigrated to America and located in Philadelphia wherehe became one of the great merchants of his day. Formany years he was a director of the Bank of the UnitedStates, and for forty-eight years, (1799-1847), he was adirector of the Insurance Company of North America. Hedied in Philadelphia, Aug. 13,1847, and his death has beendescribed as an event which produced a sensation in thecommunity seldom felt at the withdrawal of one who hadneither acquired nor coveted poHtical honors.
