Detroit, Michigan - 23 March 2014 - The Marche du Nain Rouge celebrates the coming of spring and banishes the Nain Rouge (Red Dwarf) from the city. Legend dating from the founding of Detroit 300 years ago says that Le Nain Rouge is an evil spirit responsible for many of the ills haunting the city. The annual event to drive Le Nain from Detroit now has the feel of Mardi Gras, with a parade, street theater, costumes, and food and drink. The Latin phrases "Speramus Meliora" and "Resurget Cineribus" were originally placed on the city of Detroit's flag after an 1805 fire burned the entire city. They mean: "We hope for better things" and "It will rise from the ashes."
