MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - June 21: Police are seen talking to a man and a women in the CBD as restrictions are being tightened in Victoria during COVID 19 on 21 June, 2020 in Melbourne, Australia. After a concerning spike in new coronavirus infections in metropolitan Melbourne which is once again sparking fears of a second wave, the Premier Daniel Andrews announced yesterday (20 June) that restrictions on the number of visitors in private homes will be reduced to ten to five. Victoria recorded 19 new cases overnight, the fifth day in a row of double digits increases, prompting the Government to extend the State of Emergency for another four weeks giving Police unprecedented powers to enforce directions managed by the State Government. It includes three new cases linked to an outbreak among contractors working at the Samford Plaza Hotel. The State was in the midst of easing restrictions allowing restaurants, bars and cafes to increase the number of inside patrons from 20 to 50. As a result of this spike, the Government has reversed in decision to further ease restrictions on hospitality businesses forcing many to shut their doors forever. Some of Melbourne’s most well-known restaurateurs are at on the brink of permanent closure. Victoria has had the strictest Coronavirus restrictions in the country, yet is by far the worst performing state, raising questions over the real effectiveness of this strategy.
