Cotylorhynchus synapsids. Illustration of giant six-metre-long synapsids of the genus Cotylorhynchus foraging in an Early Permian swamp 275 million years ago in what is today North America. The synapsids weigh around 1000 kilograms. Also shown, at lower left, is a one-metre-long lepospondyl amphibian of the genus Diplocaulus. The vegetation includes ferns and horsetails in the foreground. In the background is a forest of ginkgos.
