Iran: A miniature painting from 'Conference of the Birds' by Farid ud-Din Attar (1145-1221), 15th century. 'Conference of the Birds' ('Mantiq-ut-Tayr') is a Persian poem by Sufi poet Farid ud-Dun Attar. It is a frame story whose central figure, a hoopoe, is a kind of spiritual leader for a number of other birds. This miniature is from one of the book’s anecdotes about how the devout Arab Shaykh Sanan falls in love with a Christian maiden from Rum (Byzantium).
