Eugenics students. Early 20th-century photograph of two researchers studying anatomy, eugenics and genetics. Anatomy diagrams and inheritance charts are displayed on the walls (one refers to race mixtures), and stuffed rabbits are used to demonstrate the distribution of Mendelian traits in successive generations. This image is part of the collections of the American Eugenics Society (AES, founded 1923). Eugenics is the controversial practice of selectively improving the genetics of human populations. The AES was among those eugenics organisations criticised for their racist assumptions and support of forced sterilizations.
