Portable Winding Plant. —During the preliminary pro-specting period, through which amine must pass before its valueis sufificiently established to war-rant the erection of permanentmachinery, a small portablehoisting plant is of the greatestutility. Plant of this kind (illustratedin fig. 45) has been designed by. Fig. ;45.—Portable Winding Plant. Messrs. E. S. It consists of a vertical engine, with a vertical cross-tube, or other typeof boiler mounted on a strong wrought iron girder plate, extended forwardso as to carry the winding drum, which is geared to the crank engine is fitted with reversing gear. The drum has a powerfulbrake, which may be either single or double cylinder, controlled by a footlever, and can be unclutched from its shaft. The engine can then beused for driving a saw bench, or a few head of stamps or other machinery,in view of which a turned flywheel is keyed to the engine shaft, fromwhich a belt may be taken to the other machines.
