Sex hormone synthesis: Polarised light micrograph of crystals of pregnenolone. This is the first stage in the conversion of cholesterol to all of the major steroid hormones. It is synthesised by the action of an enzyme, desmolase, in the adrenal glands, the testes and the ovaries. Depending on the subsequent pathways, pregnenolone may be converted into androgens, estrogens or corticosteroids. Magnification: x10 at 35mm size.
