Woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). Illustration and photo-reconstruction of the Siberian or woolly mammoth. This is one of the most characteristic large animals of the Quaternary period. Its whole body was covered with a thick coat and a dense undercoat. Hair on the shoulders, flanks and hips reached 70 cm long, forming a kind of fringe observed in modern yak. The tail had a brush of stiff thick hair. The huge tusks had a peculiar spiral curve. Tusks of large males could reach 4 m. The average weight of a woolly mammoth was 80 kg. The lifestyle and social structure of mammoths were apparently similar to what can be observed in elephants today. The mammoth's open grassy plains habitat was the characteristic landscape of the late Pleistocene and combined features of modern tundra and forest-steppe. This giant ecosystem, which stretched from Britain to Alaska, is called the mammoth steppe.
