The Observatory at Harper College was built in 1989 and houses a 12-inch Newtonian telescope that was built in 1885. The telescope was donated to Harper College by the DuPont Family. Free public observing sessions are held regularly at the observatory throughout the year. Harper Collee, officially, William Rainey Harper College, is a community college in Palatine, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago .The was opened 1967 and is named for Dr. William Rainey Harper, a pioneer in the junior college movement in the United States and the first president of the University of Chicago.
