Brown University is a private Ivy League research university in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. Founded in 1764 prior to American independence from the British Empire it is the 3rd oldest institution of higher education in New England and the 7th oldest in the United States. College Hill has National Historic Landmark District designation. Brown University Campus is rich in residential, institutional and religious architecture of the Colonial and Victorian eras. The campus also serves as a museum comprising grand buildings and simple houses.
