Its course, like that of all the other longranges we had seen, was from the northwest to thesoutheast, with an irregular and jagged summit, oftenexhibiting picturesque and fantastic forms. The plainthat lay between us and the mountains was unbrokenby a hill or a tree. At the northwest the view waslimited by a very high mountain apparently seventyor eighty miles distant, which I supposed to be nearthe Gila. Both east and west of this mountain thecountry was open.
