The second incision, start-ing from the same point, is car-ried round on to the radial side,and meets with the first at themiddle of the metacarpal bone(fig- 337). 3. By repeated incisions onthe bone in the same directionit is liberated from the muscles. 4. The joint between the trapezium and the metacarpal bone isopened on the ulnar side, so that the edge of the knife is keptclose upon the base of the latter, and thus the joint between the meta- Esmarch, the Surgeons Handbook. 13. w carpal bone of the index finger and the trapezium, which communi-cates with the remaining carpal joints, is in no danger of being opened. 5.
