CT scanning. Female technician preparing a baby for a computed tomography (CT) scan. The child is lying on a table with its head towards the scanner. The baby is securely strapped to the table. CT scanning produces tissue 'slices' by passing X-rays through the body at different angles. The information is then sent to a computer which converts it into an image. CT scans provide clearer images than conventional X- rays and they also lower the amount of radiation exposure. CT scanning has greatly improved the ability to diagnose a wide variety of disorders, particularly in the brain.
