The burning of the American steamerCaroline near Niagara by a band of men from Canada, while itaroused a general indignation throughout the States, especiallyintensified the excitement here, and produced a feeling difficult torepress. Men were enlisted, and organizations effected, under thename of Hunter Lodges, who threatened and in fact attemptedan invasion of Canada in the interest of those who desired revolu-tion.
