HRVIR sensor on SPOT 4 satellite. Artwork of a beam below the SPOT 4 satellite, indicating the use of the HRVIR (high-resolution visible and infrared) sensor to produce detailed satellite mapping. SPOT 4, launched by the European Space Agency in 1998, is part of the SPOT (Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre) family of satellites. The SPOT satellites are operated by a company created by the French space agency (CNES). SPOT 4 improved on the earlier SPOT satellites with the addition of infrared mapping capabilities. This involved an extension of the HRV (high-resolution visible) sensor to include infrared.
