SASEBO, Japan (April 11, 2017) Commander, Fleet Activies Sasebo Captain Matthew Ovios speaks to students from Department of Defense Education Activity schools in Sasebo, Japan competing in the 14th Annual Soroban Taikai Competition at the Harbor View Club. Soroban is an abacus mathematic method where students compete in how fast they can calculate. For yomiage-zan, numbers are read quickly and students have to calculate the numbers. For mitori-zan, students calculate numbers printed on a piece of paper.
