SANDFORD FLEMING EMPIRE BUILDER BY LAWRENCE J. BURPEE HUMPHREY MILFORD OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS LONDON EDINBURGH GLASGOW NEW YORK TORONTO MELBOURNE BOMBAY 1915 PRINTED IN ENGLANDAT THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS ERIN D A L E COLLEGE LIBRARY PREFACE Some years ago, at the conclusion of a game of chess, SirSandford Fleming told me that he had been repeatedly urgedto prepare for publication his reminiscences of sixty oddyears in Canada. He did not feel equal to the task himself, but said that if I thought a biography would be of sufficientinterest to justify the trouble, and would undertake it, hewould be glad to give all the necessary particulars. There-after as occasion offered we talked over various incidents inhis long and eventful life, and he placed in my hands a seriesof diaries running back to the year 1845, when he set outfrom Glasgow in the sailing ship Brilliant to seek his fortunein the New World. We were both rather busy with othermatters, and as a result the biography progressedsandfordflemin00burp
