European water vole (Arvicola amphibius) feeding on pondweed. Water voles are mostly herbivores, but in winter they may supplement their diet with water snails. They inhabit a region from western Europe through Siberia to southwest Asia and are one of the largest types of voles, with males growing up to 22 centimetres in length. They have a short lifespan of only 5 to 6 months. Photographed in Surrey, UK.
