By this precaution, if the toe of thetripper should be depressed into the slot and not withdrawn whenthe end of the slot is reached, or if it should be by inadvertencedepressed over any part of the track, the toe upon meeting fixed re-sistance folds back like the blade of a jack knife as shown by thedotted lines in Fig. 3. The excavated bed in which the rock shaft operates should bedrained by .wme simple method to prevent the formation of ice,but should this be neglected the conduit is so constructed that aconsiderable quantity of water and ice can collect below the work-ing parts of the switch without interfering .vith its free working;if the switch point is kept in a condition to work with a pinch barthe Simplex device will operate it; also the mechanism will notinterfere with the free operation of the switch point with a pinchbar. The steel slot plate is maile removable. The -J^-in. slot openingwill admit some mud, and occasionally this mud should be removed. from the rock shaft bed, but mud will not interrupt the free work-ing of the switch. The motion of the rock shaft is so slight andso frequent and the operating force so positive that the switch willwork freely even if the conduit is full of mud. Fig. 2 gives a diagrammatic view of the tripping lever which isattached to the car. The tripping lever may be varied in its detailsso that it can be applied to either a single or double track. Fig. 3shows the tripping device as depressed, the dotted lines showingthe position taken by the toe when abnormal obstruction is encoun-tered. The device is being practically demonstrated by the ColumbusRailway Co., Columbus, and will be exhibited by model at the.\. S. R. A. convention at Saratoga in September. It is made byGeorge B. Uonavin & 616 N. High St., Columbus, O. J. G. WHITE & CO. The New York & Jersey Railroad which is to build a tunnelbetween New York and Jersey City, has retained J. G. White & Co.,
