Japan, China, New Zealand, the Himalayas, and other temperate lands contribute trees which rank amongst the most beautiful objects of the garden and park, and some of them are becoming so familiar that we are almost led to believe they are indigenous. We cherish trees, too, for their varied forms; some are erect, as the Lombardy Poplar; others are like the spreading Oak and the purple-leaved Beech; while the Willow touches the water's surface with its slender branches: a delightful variety indeed, and indispensable in the well-planted garden.
