Digestive system, artwork. The organs are shown in the relative positions they would occupy within the body. The liver (red) covers the stomach to its right. At top, the lower part of the oesophagus (gullet) brings food from the mouth into the stomach. Here, food is digested and passed into the small intestine (coiled, below stomach), where the nutrients are further digested (with bile from the liver) and then absorbed. Some of the nutrients are metabolised and stored in the liver. From the small intestine, the remains of the food pass into the large intestine (surrounding the small intestine) where water is absorbed. The faeces are then deposited through the rectum and anus (lower centre).
