A straight nozzle of i-inch pipe,12 to 16 inches long, and several bentvarious shapes, will usuallycomplete the boiler-washers outfit, as faras nozzles are concerned. And now we are ready to give the newboiler its first washing. We will blowoff the steam and cool the boiler by tak-ing out one of the top plugs in front endof shell, insert the nozzle, and turn onthe cold water; this is quicker than cool-ing through the injector. Fill the boileruntil the glass is nearly full, and keep thewater at that level until the boiler is cold, cither by opening blow-off cocks or tak-ing out one of the plugs or hand-holeplates in bottom of water leg. When theboiler is the same temperature as thewater it is to be washed with, shut offthe hydrant and empty the boiler. These holesshould be put in the straight part of sheetand not in the bend, where it is impos-sible to keep them tight. All holes should be put in where theywill not be covered up (as they often are)by hand-railing, air pump, driver-brake-cylinder, injector, gage-cock dripper, reach rod, pipes, etc., making it utterlyimpossible to do good washing-out. On a number of roads, four tubes are these holes, make a nozzle of iJ4-inchpipe long enough to reach back tubesheet. Weld a plug in one end and cut aslot in one side (as near the welded endas possible) 1^4 x lA inch. If a long nozzle is inconvenient to there is not room enough in front ofengines, make the nozzle in two pieces.
