Meanwhile hehad developed a taste for political discussion, andbecame a frequent contributor to the Boston Weekly Magazine and the Boston -Post. In1840 he ceased writing on political subjects, andturned his attention almost exclusively to theagricultural journals. His papers in HoveysMagazine of Horticulture formed the basis of 478 FLAXAG HAN FLANDRAU. Wdm ^fe i his first book. Many of his articles also ap-peared in the Atlantic Monthly. From 1844till 1848 he was employed in the Boston custom-house. In 1850 he removed to Cambridge, Mass., where he afterward re-sided. He was the au-thor of Studies inthe Field and For-est (Boston, 1857) ; Woods and By-Ways of New Eng-land (1872); and Birds and Seasonsof New England(1875). lie also edited Mount Auburn, itsScenes, its Beauties,and its Lessons.
