The Gundremmingen nuclear power plant is located at the Danube river near Günzburg in Bavaria, Germany. It consists of 3 generating units, 2 of which are currently in operation with a total power output of 2938 megawatts (MW). Reactor unit A, which was located in the dome shaped containment building, was built beginning in 1962 as the first commercial nuclear power plant in Germany, a BWR (boiling water reactor) with a power output of 237 MW. It had to be shut down permanently after 11 years of operation in 1977, after a serious accident occurred which resulted in control failures and the partial flooding of the reactor building with hot water. Reactor blocks B and C, located in the cylindric containment buildings, went online in 1984. These are also boiling water reactors, each with an electrical power output of 1344 MW. The cooling water is being taken from the Danube. After reducing its temperature in the two large cooling towers it returns to the river. The site also includes an interim storage building for spent nuclear fuel (SNF). Due to the weather conditions and distance involved, heat haze is visible in this picture. Das Kernkraftwerk Gundremmingen befindet sich an der Donau im Landkreis Günzburg in Bayern. Mit zwei Siedewasserreaktoren von jeweils 1344 MW Leistung ist es das leistungsstärkste deutsche Kernkraftwerk. Dies sind die Blöcke B und C in den zylinderförmigen Reaktorgebäuden (Sicherheitsbehälter). Diese gingen 1984 in Betrieb. Der stillgelegte und im Rückbau befindliche Block A (kuppelförmiges Gebäude) war das erste kommerzielle Atomkraftwerk Deutschlands, das 1966 seinen Betrieb aufnahm. Nach einem schweren Unfall im Jahr 1977 wurde es nach nur 11 Jahren permanent stillgelegt. Das Kühlwasser wird aus der Donau entnommen und nach Gebrauch mit Hilfe der beiden Kühltürme in der Temperatur abgesenkt, bevor es wieder in den Fluss zurückgeleitet wird. Auf dem Gelände befindet sich ebenfalls ein Zwischenlager für abgebrannte Brennelemente.
