The ruined 16th Century Sandsfoot Castle, an artillery fort built in the reign of Henry VIII to defend Portland Harbour. Weymouth, Dorset, England, UK
Sandsfort Castle was completed in 1541 during the reign of King Henry VIII. It was one of a pair of artillery forts, built at about the same time, covering Portland Harbour against attack from the sea. Known as Henrician castles or device forts they form part of a chain of coastal defences created to protect the kingdom from raids or even invasion from both France and Spain. Over the centuries much of the building has been destroyed and washed away by coastal erosion. After years of neglect the remaining structure has been stabilised and renovated with walkways and floodlighting provided. This work was carried out in time for the 2012 Olympic games in which Weymouth and Portland hosted the sailing events.
