In 1146, PopeEugenius the Third desired that this might be charged withthe red cross, to designate their readiness to shed their bloodin defence of the Christian faith. Their banner was white, in token of their candor andingenuousness; and it was striped with black, to showhow terrible were the effects of their valor to the enemies ofthe name of Jesus Christ, the black stripes being symbolicalof death. Their cross had two horizontal bars (J). Fortyyears after their institution, when they held their first chapterat Jerusalem, their numbers were six hundred.—A.
