The Manufacture of Air Brakes That the popularity of air brakes in steam railroad service prom-ises to be repeated in the electric railway field seems to be indi-cated by the comparatively large number of brake equipmentswhich the factories devoted to their construction are putting onthe market. The application of these brakes has naturally beenmade first to heavy interurban and elevated railroad cars, wherethe inefficiency of the ordinary hand brake is most clearly appar-ent, but other companies are investigating the subject, and a con-siderable number of them have already declared themselves in fa-vor of a power FIG. 1,—MACHINE SHOP occupies a space of about 120 ft. x 60 ft.
