LEAR accelerator. View of the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN, the European particle physics lab near Geneva. LEAR is used to accelerate antiprotons to relatively low energies, around 6 million electron volts (MeV). The low energy allows the accelerator to have four straight 'sides' and sharply-curved corners, giving good access for experiments and support equipment. One current experiment (1995) is an attempt to create anti-hydrogen, atoms containing an antiproton and a positron (anti- electron).
