DERIVATION OF THE NAME OF LINCOLN The name Lincoln is derived from two words, Lin be-ing an abbreviation of the name of the Roman colony ofLindum, England, the site of the present city of Lincoln, and Coin, from Colonia. Consequently the name means Lindum Colonia. As to the meaning of the word Lindum there is noknowledge. This, and the Roman colony of Agrippina, or as con-tracted to the present Coin, Koln, Cologne, are theonly two colonies of Imperial Rome which continue to havethis designation perpetuated in their names. Wareham, Mass., is named from Wareham, County Dorset,England, and is similarly situated on a peninsula. Wareham, Mass., is on a peninsula at the head of Buz-zards Bay, between the rivers Weweantit on the west, andthe Wankinquoah on the east, upon the latter of which issituated the town. Wareham, England, is on a peninsula between the riversPiddle and Frome. The country around Wareham, Mass., was settled early inthe history of Plymouth Colony (about 1680) by settlersfr
