Nordlinger Ries impact crater. Artwork of the lake that formed in the Nordlinger Ries crater following its creation 14 million years ago during the Miocene Epoch. The crater is around 24 kilometres across and formed following the impact of a meteorite. The lake that formed following the impact is thought to have been saline, and the resulting limestones provide numerous fossils from that era. The lake eventually drained, and the crater walls are much eroded. The crater is now mostly agricultural land surrounding the city of Nordlinger in Bavaria, Germany.
