Transcription: General Hospital Springfield Mo July the 31st of 1864 Dear Brother I take my pen in hand to drop you a few lines to let you know that I am still here and in my usual health although I have not bin very well since I wrote to you last and I hope that when these few lines comes to hand they may find you enjoying the same blesing yore letter of the 27th come to hand yesterday and I was truly glad to hear that you still continued in yore good health well I have not much news to write at this time I got a letter from father dated July the 25th he said that they was all well at that time that there was plenty of Bushwhackers up there but that they was not a doing much mischief he said that if they could only have another rain that he would make a fine chance of corn I have bin a trying to persuade him to leave up there but he says that if times dont get worse up there he intends to stay there this sumer any how if ?ǣstay here ? intend to try and get a furlough about the first of December and go up home if the Bushwhackers aint to bad I expect that I will stay here untill the first of the winter I would like to go to the regiment but it is so sickly down there that I think that I will stay here a while longer it is a geting sickly out here almost all the nurses and attendants around the hospital here are a geting sick there has two men died in my ward they are the first that have died here for over two months well Brother I am sory that you are in so much trouble and I dont know that I can give you any advice about it for I dont know what I would do if I was placed in yore situation but this I will say to you that if I was in yore place I would do what I thought was rite and what would clear my concience and then let the world and the people say what they pleased about it but I think that you are mistaken about the reason of fathers not writing at least I hope that you are this thing of getin
