An aurora appears across the northern sky over the University of Calgary's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory on May 11, 2024 during one of the RAO's monthly Space Nights with talks and telescopes for the public. The RAO is near Priddis, southwest of Calgary, Alberta. Telescopes are staffed by members of the Calgary Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. This May weekend was when a major geomagnetic storm was hitting Earth producing widely seen auroras around the world. The show this night was dimmer than the previous night, and the sky was also plagued by smoke from fires in northern and Alberta. A waxing crescent Moon lights the sky at left, and I shot this photo when the sky was still in deep twilight. Members of the RASC are using green laser pointers to point out sights in the sky. These "GLPs" are legal in Canada if used by trained members of clubs and organizations such as the RASC and RAO. The W stars of Cassiopeia are low in the north just above the Visitor Centre building and roll-off observatory for the Celestron 14 telescope. The winter stars Castor and Pollux in Gemini and Capella in Auriga are at left in the west. Polaris is at top centre. This is a blend of two 10-second exposures with the TTArtisan 11mm full-frame fish-eye lens at on the Canon EOS R at ISO 1600. Adobe DeNoise AI applied.
