A portcullis in pargetted plaster - plus a fleur-de-lys - on the pink-painted facade of 11 High Street in Lavenham, Suffolk, England, UK, part of a 15th century hall house rebuilt in the 16th century. It then became the Black Lion Inn, one of the last English hostelries associated with the cruel sport of bull-baiting. The landlord and his associates were fined in 1842 for attracting 200 people to a bull-baiting event characterised by "great uproar and filthy language".

Lavenham, Suffolk, England, UK: a portcullis motif and a fleur-de-lis feature in pargeting - a decorative design pressed into wet plaster - on the pink-painted facade of 11 High Street, a gabled, timber framed house beside a carriage entrance once used by the former Black Lion Inn. The property is in a range of timber framed and plastered buildings, 10-13 High Street, that were once part of a 15th century hall house of which only one cross wing survives. Nos. 11 and 12 were rebuilt in the 16th century. The Black Lion Inn occupied a large part of the range from at least 1768 until it closed around 1925. The Black Lion was one of the last hostelries in England associated with the cruel sport of bull-baiting, with the landlord and his associates being fined in 1842 for organising an event that attracted about 200 spectators amid "great uproar and filthy language". The entire range now enjoys Grade II* Listed building protection and is among more than 300 properties in the town judged to be of architectural and historic interest. The wool and cloth trade made Lavenham one of England's richest towns in the medieval and Tudor periods, with the size and grandeur of buildings such as the Gothic parish church and the Guildhall of Corpus Christi demonstrating its prosperity at that time.
