The Colosseum (demolished 1874) Regent's Park. London. SHEPHERD, print 1828

'The Coliseum, Regent's Park'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Drawn by Thos. H. Shepherd . Provenance: "Metropolitan Improvements; or London in the 19th century"; by Mr. Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, James Elmes, Published by Jones and Co., London. Type: Antique steel engraved print. The London Colosseum was a building on the east side of Regent's Park. It was built in 1827 to exhibit Thomas Hornor's enormous "Panoramic view of London", which at 40,000 square feet was the largest painting ever created. Its cost was so great that its principal backer, Rowland Stephenson MP, had to flee to America. It did not prove commercially successful. In 1855 it was auctioned; the highest bid, for a building on which had cost £200,000, was £20,000. It was demolished in 1874
