His boyhood days were passed upon the farm; and he waseducated at Dartmouth college, from which he graduated in his early days his conduct was unusually regular, and in col-lege he was orderly, obedient to authority and diligent in hisstudies. He was early interested in religious matters, but didnot unite with the church of his boyhood until the summer afterhe graduated from college. He taught school a year at North-ampton, Mass., and entered the law office of Hon. Thomas at Whitesborough, N. Y., as a student. He was soon con-vinced that the legal profession was not what he would care toadopt. D., of Somers, an eminent theologian, whohad directed the studies of many candidates for the were, at that time, no theological seminaries in the coun-try. In 1802, he was licensed to preach by the association ofWindham county, and supplied vacant pulpits, but declined sev-eral invitations to settle. In the autumn of 1803, he was engagedin the Second society of Saybrook (now Centerbrook), Conn.,where by reason of the advanced age of the pastor, Rev. Rich-ard Ely, the people were disposed to employ a candidate to assisthim and should his services be acceptable to settle him as col-league pastor. According to the custom of those prudent timeshe preached several months, finally receiving a call. He was or-dained as colleag
