In the ordinary workingof the road the trucks will not run up to the platformwithin a few inches, and the space so left is covered witha hinged flap which will move up with the car. In fixing the dimensions of the cylinders of the mainwinding engines, care was taken to have only sufficientarea to lift the maximum loads upon the cars withoutsurplus power to overstrain the cables and are two steam boilers for supplying the engines of (^tied^^?^aikc^5^Vi£u^ 638 the winding gearing, the electric hght plant, and thepump, either of them of sufficient capacity for the ordi-nary work of the incline. The feed water is filteredand heated by passing a heater and filters. There are. CHIEF WINDING ENGINE. two balanced piston slide valve engines coupled togetherat right angles upon one engine shaft and controlled bylink motions and levers. Upon this shaft is a very pow-erful cast iron pinion, having machine-dressed cogs andgeared into the main gear wheel, which is cogged withhard maple. This gear wheel is keyed to the drum shaft, and has upon it a large brake rim and a rim for the maindrum. Upon the other end of this shaft is a strong castiron rim for the drum. The drum is built up of strong oaklagging, securely bolted to the rim. There is also a verystrong cast iron rim bolted inside the drum, for additionalstrength. Upon the outer rim is a large brake rim, tooperate in unison with the brake upon the main gearwheel. All the engines and winding machinery are builtupon stone foundations, extending down into the solidrock and secured with large foundation bolts bored intothe bed rock. The pilot house is in the center of the top
