Viral conjunctivitis of both eyes of a 1-year-old boy. The eyes are bloodshot with a watery discharge. These symptoms are caused by a viral infection of the conjunctiva. This is the membrane lining the inside of the eyelids and covering the exposed part of the eyeball. Viral conjunctivitis can spread rapidly in a population, causing an epidemic. It can be triggered by a cold or sore throat, or another viral illness. There is no specific cure and it usually clears up without treatment.
