St. Bathans church was built in 1883 and is a reminiscent of the big Otago Gold Rush in New Zealand. It started in the end of May 1861 with an Australian finding gold in Gabriel's Gully and attracting several thousand miners to the country. Where they found gold, towns like St. Bathans or formerly Dunstan Creek boomed to service the miners. In the end of the 1860s the gold rush ceased, and a lot of the boom towns became ghost towns. St. Bathans survived as a small settlement and holiday retreat. Die 1883 errichtete Kirche in St. Bathans ist ein Überbleibsel aus der Zeit nach dem Goldrausches in den 1860er Jahren in Neuseeland.
