Leaves of White Poplar sapling / Populus alba, leaves having somewhat downy grey coating to the leaf undersides, with darker green leaf topsides.

Initially ID'd this as Grey Poplar but having followed this particular young tree through a full annual cycle it is most definitely a White Poplar (I have other pix on Alamy showing mature summer leaves off this same tree which mark it as P. alba). It seems the younger immature annual foliage doesn't develop the fuller Maple-like shape of the leaves towards the tips of the branched, while the bigger maple-like leaves also develop a more true white downy underside to them.
