The Ecclesiastical Courts or Tribunals subsist and are ad-mitted, in England, not by any right of their own, but uponbare sufferance and toleration from the municipal laws, andthey are principally guided by the rules of the civil andcanon laws. They must have recourse to the laws of Eng-land to be informed how far their jurisdiction extends, orwhat causes are permitted, and what forbidden, to be dis-cussed or drawn in question before them, the only uniformrule to determine the jurisdiction of the courts in Englandbeing the common law.
