Construction began on the design by C L Engel in 1830 and was completed after his death in 1840 by his successor E B Lohrmann who added four little towers round the main dome The church was named for St Nicholas the patron saint of trade and seafaring and of Tsar Nicholas The organ has 5614 pipes in 57 registers
