Few parts of the trek were this nice. Most were roughly hewn trails only one-person wide hanging treacherously on the side of steep slopes. This was a strategic advantage that the Italian's took advantage of after placing explosives along the trail in the event the Austro-Hungarian army were able to make it that far. By blowing up the trail it would make passing nearly impossible.
