For a time they resided in Los Angeles and engaged in orangeculture on Eighth Street, between San Pedro and Alameda streets. In 1871. however,the family moved to Santa Ana, and a short distance north of the present site of Orange,Amos Travis laid out the famous tract of about 800 acres. For a number of years. J. Coleman Travis was superintendent of the plant of theSanta Ana Valley Irrigation Company, and in this capacity he played an important partin the building up of the plant and in the construction of its canals and ditches. also became the owner of
