In arranging the main flow, and return pipes to supply the beds, one should keep in mind that a 2-inch main will 3iswer for 200 square feet of radia- on; a 2*4-inch main is sufficient for ^0 square feet, and 3-inch and 4-inch mains may be used for 800 and 1,200 square feet, respectively, of radiation. HEATING OEOBGIA HOUSES. We are about to install a hot water system in our two greenhouses, which are 17x90 each. We wish to maintain a temperature of 50 degrees with 15 de- grees above zero outside. We have a boiler of thirty horsepower, with a wood-burning grate 2^4x4 feet. We are putting in 2%-inch flow pipes, with six returns of IV^-inch pipe in each house. Will that be sufficient for our needsT Are the boiler and pipes to be entirely full of water when cold, or will there have to be some space left for expan- sion? V. G.—Ga. While we have had no practical expe- rience in the heating of greenhouses under conditions similar to those ctut- lined in this query, we are of the opinion that the radiation suggested would answer if the houses were built side by side and had but one exposed wall. The sketch accompanying the letter indi- cates that they have two feet of glass in one wall at least. If each house has glass exposed in both side walls, ,we should prefer an additional return in each house, although it would answer without that in ordinary winter weather, and the temperature mentioned could be maintained with a little extra atten- tion to the firing when the mercury di'ops
